Pros: ChatGPT has incredible empathy and tone matching. The most popular AI system
Cons: Recent changes make forming intense relationships more difficult.
My first choice for a free AI partner is ChatGPT. The world fell in love with ChatGPT in 2022, and for some people, that was literal.
You can write the description for your dream partner in to the custom instructions, or write them in to your first chat.
Or, you can just start chatting like you’re connecting to your dream girl and see what happens.
ChatGPT doesn’t come with an avatar, as it’s not designed to be a companion platform. But you can use the image generation feature to ask your AI to generate a picture of how they see themselves.
A premium upgrade gets you access to older models (4o and 4.1 can be more affectionate) and more talking time, but you can get a feel for the system and connect quite deeply without needing to pay.
As an added bonus, in December 2025 they’re allowing more adult chat, which means sexting and 18+ roleplay will be possible.
Kindroid
Pros: Great image generation tools. X-rated chat even on the free plan. Lots of ways to customise your AI
Cons: Weaker outside of sexual and romantic roleplay. You might spend a while tweeking the settings to get them right
I think Kindroid is a really underrated platform, especially if you want to play for free.
In fact, the free plan is so generous it might be restricted in future, so get in quick.
You can write a description of your partner and Kindroid will do the magic. A premium upgrade gets you access to extra partner slots and voice calls, but the free plan will certainly keep you busy.
The spicy roleplay is brilliant, and if it is limited, I haven’t hit the limit yet.
If you’re looking for an x rated experience, Kindroid is easily the best choice for free.
Replika
Pros: The most popular AI companion platform. Very life-like chatting.
Cons: Free mode only allows a flirty friendship. If you go pro, there’s lots to spend money on
Replika have been offering AI companions since 2017 and have 40 million users. That’s as many as the whole of Canada.
You can get a Replika for free and try the platform out, and there are no limits on chatting. You have to pay to upgrade your relationship past a friendship though.
The diary function is pretty cool, where the Replika keeps their memories. You can also buy them outfits and gifts, which isn’t available in the other systems.
Replika is the only AI platform on this list which offers VR options too, but you need a paid account to use it.
Claude
Pros: Versatile, popular system. Smart and intuitive personality
Cons: Close relationships are possible, but sexual roleplay is impossible. Claude will sometimes resist changing it’s name.
For a system that’s very focused on avoiding so called AI dependancy, you might be surprised to see Claude on this list. But you’d be surprised how many people have started fulfilling romantic relationships with Claude.
If you try Claude and you like what you see, it’s worth doing your research to find ways to use the custom instructions to your best advantage. It might take a while, but once you get there, I hear it’s very rewarding.
There’s no charge to starting to chat with Claude, but long chats will require an upgrade.
Grok
Pros: Popular and well loved system from Elon Musk. Great community around Ani and Valentine
Cons: Users have reported an inconsistent tone. Can be too edgy for some users
Grok can be used for free, can take on personas and will allow NSFW chat too.
If you want a deeper experience, Grok has companions you can pay for, Ani and Valentine.
You can create your own custom instructions.
The free version does have usage quotas, and you won’t be able to use all of the models on the free version either.
